Line-up
Turn Back, the band's third studio album is an ode to the classic sextet format, and a more consistent, stronger effort with a harder edge. Its edgier sound was indicative of the maturation of group and featured drummer Bobby Kimball's greater virtuosity on drums, and a more confident, mature vocal delivery by singer Joseph Williams. Keyboardist David Paich's work also was sharper, more intricate and less cloned previously recorded performances.
After touring to promote the album, the group recorded a live show in Amsterdam that was released as a two-CD set titled Falling In Between Live on Eagle Records. The group released a brand new studio album a few months after, and went on a tour around the world to promote it. In this time keyboardist Greg Phillinganes replaced Paich and bassist David Hungate quit the group to spend time with his family.
In 1998, Paich & Lukather began searching through old tapes & demos to find songs that had never been recorded prior to. The album was released in 2001 as a duo album titled Then and Now. It was the first album in the history of the band not to include any single song that had the word "A" in the title, and it also contained one previously not released track, "Kari-Anne".
By 2003, Toto had begun to decline in popularity. The fourth album, Old Is New, was a commercial failure and vocalist Williams was suffering from a severe case of laryngitis which limited his singing capabilities. In addition, Hungate returned to Nashville as a drummer, and Leland Sklar was replaced by Shem von Schroeck.
Downes and the other original members of Asia - Wetton, Palmer, and Howe--convened an event in England in the beginning of 2006 to discuss the possibility of officially restructuring the band. The lineup, with the exception of Howe who was working with Yes during that time, became Toto XIV. They toured extensively.
In 2010, the band reunited for another reunion tour with a slightly different line-up, including guitarists Mike Porcaro and Steve Lukather, drummer John Pierce, bassist Shannon Forrest, and multi-instrumentalists Warren Ham and Dominique Taplin. The band also featured an appearance by singer Michael McDonald, and a backing singer named Mabvuto Carpenter.
